The Saab 900’s Unique Engine Layout: Engineering Backwards
The Saab 900, particularly the classic generation (1978-1993), featured one of the most unconventional engine installations in automotive history. Saab mounted the engine backwards and tilted it 45 degrees forward—a configuration that baffled mechanics but delivered significant advantages.
This reverse-mounted layout stemmed from Saab’s aviation heritage and their commitment to front-wheel drive packaging. By positioning the engine with the transmission ahead of the block rather than behind, Saab achieved a more compact drivetrain that improved weight distribution and maximized interior space.
